Online businesses reach 50 per cent mark

The percentage of UK businesses with their own websites has surged from 29 per cent in 2002 to reach the half way mark this year, a new survey has found. The survey of small businesses conducted by Kellysearch.com, an internet-based product search engine, reveals that increasing numbers are carrying out their activities online, the Mail on Sunday reported. However, the research found evidence of a regional divide, with firms in the south of the country more likely to run a website than those in the north. Guildford in Surrey emerged as the country's best-connected city, with 64.5 per cent of businesses online. More surprisingly, the capitals of England and Scotland were beaten by smaller towns, with business more likely to be on the web in Banbury, Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes than in London or Edinburgh.
