LookSmart launches bid-for-placement service
2003-10-03
LookSmart has introduced an auction style bid-for-placement service that will enable advertisers to bid for various search terms.
Under the new system advertisers will have increased chances of their sites being listed in search results if they bid high enough.
The move will make LookSmat the first search engine to offer paid inclusion and bid-for-placement in one integrated service.
A new directory of sponsored listings will be distributed across a network of LookSmart's partner sites, including CNET, Road Runner, InfoSpace, Cox, Mamma and Alltel.
The existing fixed-price LookListings will still exist in tandem with the new service.
LookSmart's new move is the latest development in an increasingly competitive search market, recently having seen a Yahoo/Overture merge.
Software giant Microsoft is also set to boost sector competition with the upcoming launch of its own search engine.
