'Google-bombers' target President Bush

2003-12-23

Hackers hoping for a change in presidential leadership have become the latest to use 'Google-bombing' in a bid to embarrass President Bush.

The internet community has noticed that typing in 'miserable failure', a phrase heavily used by rival Presidential hopeful Republican Richard Gephardt of Missouri, on the popular web search engine, now directs users to George W. Bush's official online biography.

Web page authors achieve the effect by tying together two phrases on their own internet sites and then linking it to other sites. Because of the technology used by Google, if enough links are provided the search engine will yield the site as the top result.

The phenomenon appears to be the latest application of the internet to politics, although Gephardt and his supporters insist they are not behind the online Bush-baiting.

'This is not a political statement from Google, but rather a reflection of a recent Web phenomenon,' a spokesperson told the Chicago Tribune.

The company says it is aware of Google-bombing, but not responsible for its results.
